Helen Huff Mays, 96 of Clarktown passed away Friday, December 10, 2021. A native of Pike County, she was born December 18, 1924 to the late Roy and Ethel Mathena Huff. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James C. Mays on August 4, 1973, a sister, Florence McCoy Kniceley, a brother, Orvel (Etta)Huff and a foster sister, Imogene Stuckey.
Surviving are three nephews, Robert D. McCoy of Sagle, Idaho, Larry R. (Alice) Huff of Bainbridge, Ohio, Orvel L. (Denise) Huff of Cuba, Ohio, a foster niece, Maxene McClellan of Jamestown, Ohio. Also surviving is a niece, Shirley Millar of Lucasville, Ohio and a wonderful friend and neighbor, Angela Harris of Clarktown.
Helen was a graduate of Western High School and Wilmington College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She also completed two years at Ohio University. She taught elementary school at Cynthiana, Ohio for seven years before coming to Scioto County where she taught twenty-eight years at Glendale School in Valley Local School District. She became head teacher there in 1965 and remained in that position until her retirement in July, 1978. She was inducted into the Teacher's Hall of Fame in 2017.
Helen wrote poetry as a hobby, writing for special events and special people upon request. She was published in the year 2000 in "America at the Millennium," a book of poets and poetry of the 20th Century.
She was a 35 year member of the Ohio Education Association, a life member of the Scioto County Retired Teacher's Association and a member of Grace Baptist Church in Minford where she was a previous board member and treasurer for 16 years.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 13, 2021 at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Franklin Furnace with Rev. Scott Duncan officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
