Mark Randall "The Golden Boy" Frazie was a professional middleweight boxer from Sciotoville, Ohio, who had a notable career in the 1980s. He passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Frazie began his professional boxing career on September 25, 1980, and remained active until 1988. Over the course of his career, he fought 38 bouts, achieving 29 wins (15 by knockout), 9 losses, and no draws. His knockout rate stood at an impressive 51.72%. Frazie faced several prominent opponents, including Bobby Czyz, Vinnie Curto, and Alex Ramos. Notably, his bout against Wilford Scypion in July 1982 was nationally televised, where he suffered his first professional loss. He fought 270 amateur fights, was a 5 time WVA Golden Glove Champion, went to Nationals 5 times, #1 ranked middleweight in U.S. and also fought for USA Olympic Team in 1979 against Russia
Beyond the ring, Frazie was a cherished figure in his community. Born in Sciotoville and residing in Portsmouth, Ohio, he was celebrated for his contributions both as an athlete and as a community member. He attended Minford High School, Wait's Missionary Baptist Church and was known for his involvement in local initiatives. He started Hooks for Books, making hero's one round at a time. Hooks for Books brought communities together, mentoring kids in sportsmanship, leadership and boxing. Mark was a devout Christian, he was heavily involved with Athletes for Christ, hosted a TV show called Down for the Eight Count and was featured on national TV many times. A recent tribute highlighted his impact: "Mark Frazie was truly a hometown hero who did so much for our area that nobody ever knew about."
In his final days, the Portsmouth Motorcycle Club honored him with a motorcycle escort, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he garnered within the community.
Mark is survived by two sons, Mark (Kimberly) Frazie, Todd Frazie; one grandson, Leon Frazie; four brothers, David (Kim) Frazie, Danny (Lynn) Frazie, Jeff Frazie, Dino (Amy) Frazie, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2025 at Wait's Missionary Baptist Church with David Frazie officiating.Burial will be in Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg. Visitation will be at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
