Robert D. Mays, 87 of Portsmouth passed away Friday, September 15, 2023 at Southern Ohio Medical Center. He was born February 3, 1936 in Muletown, Ohio, and the son of the late Escue "Eck" William and Pearl G. Dodds Mays. He graduated from Valley High School in 1954 and later earned associate, bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Cincinnati.
He was the former Director of Computer Services and Operations at the University of Cincinnati. He was also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Engineering Analysis and a Lecturer on Information Processing Systems at the university. Upon his retirement in 1995 as an Associate Professor of Computer Programming Technology at the University of Cincinnati – Clermont College he was honored with the title of Associate Professor Emeritus. After retiring and relocating to Clarktown, he taught part-time at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth. He started his career in computer technology as a Computer Programmer at Goodyear Atomic Corporation in Piketon, Ohio before beginning his career at the University of Cincinnati in 1964.
He is survived by five sons, Robert (Linda) Mays, Jr. of Cincinnati, Jon (Elizabeth) Mays of West Chester, Donald (Tahli) Mays of Covington, KY, Gregory (Pamela) Mays of Lexington, VA, Jeffrey (Kimberly) Mays of Rocklin, CA; fifteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren, and one sister, Carolyn (John) White. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Patricia Ann Morgan Mays on April 9, 2022.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1:00pm on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Bennett Cemetery in Minford with Dan Widdig officiating. Friends may call at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford one hour prior to the graveside service. Online condolences may be sent to www.edafh.com.
